My take on FMA & FMAB(from a more FMAB bias): whether which 1 you will see first and which later, you must keep in mind that you will see the same story (kinda) in the first 12-14 episodes. Because in episode 15(FMAB) onward(if not a bit earlier) new characters appear and by the time of episode 20 of both FMA&FMAB many important changes had already happened and the plot of both shows diverge drastically.
I could say that between the 2 ,FMA has stronger first 12-14 episodes than FMAB,more likely due to the fact that the producers wanted get out of the way as fast as possible what was adapted in 2003(the mindset that you’ve already watched the 2003 version) get quickly to the unadapted material, but from a first time viewing perspective they’re not bad episodes and also provide hints of the unadapted plot points of FMA.
Both have their share amount of darkness, action and comedy but FMA is considered darker than FMAB but i have some criticism with FMA darkness bordelining if not entering in this ( particually in its last quarter. (warning, that webpage is addicting as hell).
Finally the “”deal breaker””, the ending, there are multiplues bipolar reception in boths(like in any media)so ultimately it will come down to your personal judgment. But anyway any of the 2 are animes that you should watch before dying (i know a bit extreme).
