Possibilities rise for a Legend of Korra Movie (Animated)

The Legend of Korra The Movie
119 Comments

IGN has recently released a report detailing increased activity in Paramounts “Animation Plans” saying:

Paramount has recently ramped up its animation plans by hiring seven writers to tackle projects, some of which Mary Parent and J.J. Abrams will oversee. What’s more, Paramount chief Brad Grey has been tasked with hitting up its sister division Nickelodeon for animated properties including The Legend of Korra. - IGN

Doesn’t seem like anything’s even close to confirmed at this point, though IGN said this:

Big news, Avatar fans! Thanks to Paramount Animation, we may soon be getting a Legend of Korra movie. – IGN

We know Mike and Bryan have expressed interest in doing a full length movie based in the Avatar universe in the past, so it definitely would seem like a possibility, especially with Paramount seemingly taking a more active interest in the animation department.

As long as it doesn’t interfere with the still to come 3 seasons of Korra, i’m all for it.  Seems like it would be awesome way to explore the Avatar universe.

What do you think about a full length animated movie (obviously M. Night would not be involved in this one)?  It could really boost interest in Korra and ATLA, and so long as most of the team that worked on ATLA and Korra were involved it has a major chance of being epic.

I think it’s definitely a move in the right direction.

Being produced along side the LOK series would be amazing, but even if it wasn’t, it’d still be something to look forward to and be able to capture a new audience. Movies also generally get more advertising than TV series too.

This might also give the green light to M. Night Shyamalan for him to continue the live action series, and start on the sequel.
Though for his involvement with the animation, I’d say it’s very near to zilch.

As for your question, not everyone hates the live action movie, not everyone likes to dwell on negativity. I liked TLA for being different to the show (not just a copy, it is it’s own continuity), so I would want to see a sequel just to see the different approach to Book 2.

So what you’re saying is this is a stand alone movie that doesn’t have anything to do with the regular series. Its okay, most anime movies in Japan based on TV series are also like that. For me, I like it hopefully they’ll be showing at least a teaser trailer about it and when they’ll release that.

But the thing is what will it be? Will it be 2D or 3D since almost all of the animation movies are now in 3D. If you look at the Pokemon movies, 95% of the movie is 2D and the rest is 3D and they release them not on cinemas but on direct-to-video DVD and Blu-Ray or in a cable channel like Cartoon Network.

Anyway I’ll be looking forward to that.

A stand-alone movie would certainly work, as it’ll be roughly around half of Book 1 of LOK. In the first half, the Pro-bending situation was nicely settled, so an Avatar movie would definitely have enough time to introduce characters, and have a good plot.

It’ll most likely be 2D. At least to start with, I reckon.

I hope they don’t even consider 3D honestly. It would distract viewers from the richness of the classic 2D animation IMHO.

Personally, I think that it being in 3D and 2D would be excellent, but obviously would be a lot more work.

If they make a movie and put it in 3d, millions of avatar fans would go to the midnight premiere. I wonder what the glasses would look like because usually they are themed for only the midnight premier like how the Harry Potter movies had round 3d glasses. Or it would be cool I they passed out element themed 3d glasses. :)

    Avatar of Hugh

    Hugh Reply:

I think that would ruin it. We all know Avatar and Korra as a hand drawn animation with a few bits of CGI here and there. But I don’t think that would happen since Mike and Bryan are largely influenced by Anime and admire the hand drawn techniques(and so do I). So they probably won’t switch to 100% CGI in the foreseeable future. Anyway, it would be pretty amazing to see a hand drawn animation in the Cinema, since it seldom happens these days.

That would be interesting indeed. If there’s going to be a story like this, the setting will take place 5 years after Aang defeated Ozai and before Yakone makes his appearance (Aang would probably be 17).

The main antagonist would be Azula (for me she is a better antagonist than Ozai) probably wanted to avenge her father and it would be interesting in the movie we could see Ursa (Zuko’s mother) for the first time not just in flashbacks.

But of course the movie will have to be in 2D animation (with a little bit of 3D when they use bending). They’ll probably find a new voice actor for an older Aang and hopefully the story within it might be a little bit darker like Legend of Korra but also with some antics.

No need to be condescending an call Paramount “movie creatures”. At least, it seems to be very patronising.

I think another reason that it’s going to be animated (apart from the obvious one) is that it generally costs less. This is essentially a trial movie, and I think if it becomes a success, we can expect more to come. :)

I didn’t do a good job of explaining my thoughts earlier here I go:
I will start by explaining that LOK bk 1 was the best LOK bk 1 can get. Because: The story of the two NWT brothers was sad but in a beautiful Ethan Frome sort of way with grandness. The animation was great quality, most of the background paintings are good enough to be sold as wall paintings alone and the characters and action doesn’t look sketchy or incomplete. Being twelve episodes long that alot of things happened in that were only explained enough, but not explained as much as we would like latter on, Bolin and Mako staying at Asamis mansion could have had two episodes and the interest would still be alive and most non-fan site viewers would still come back every week.
Secondly I will talk about movie length of ATLA live action: Though M. Night and Paramount are different some lessons are transferable. M Night made 20 episodes happen in under two hours. Fair number of ATLA bk 1 episodes were non-facing Firelord plot themed LOK bk 1 didn’t have fillers and was only 8 episodes shorter than ATLA bk1. This shows that unless I hear otherwise I believe the movie will be two hours-ish and because LOK bk1 shipping seemed rushed the movie will be more rushed.
Thirdly I will talk about the Stay or Go side of this:
I am not a G1er (those who believe ATLA cannot be beat and talk LOK down before they think) I preach to G1ers about having an open mind so I will do the same; if I enjoy the movie and I will force myself to try by posting positive things about it on Facebook I owe Paramount an apology and will buy it on DVD. But I offer this wisdom LOK bk1 will be hard to beat in two hours, trying a different plot we don’t know about will make us on the edge of our seat due to interest.
    Lastly my closing thoughts:
-Longer (but not to slow) is better. Two hour-ish middle ground did not work in history.
-And different plot can make this feasible.
-If it goes well I am a new Paramount fan.

    Avatar of Ricardo

    Ricardo Reply:

I actually think that LOK Book 1 had room for much improvement. However, I am not saying that it was bad, because I truly enjoyed it and want more. In fact, it was very well done given the time frame, but there is certainly aspects of it that could have been a lot better, or at the very least, slightly better.

As for the movie, it’s not confirmed at the moment so we don’t know much. Much less, the fact that it’ll be a movie on LOK Book 1. Because, seriously, what would be the point?
One might as well watch LOK Book 1 again.
IMHO, It’ll most likely be a separate movie, a stand-alone movie. Anyone that has watched anime and seen their movies would know what I’m talking about here.
2 hours is plenty of time to introduce characters and plot development. :D

Movie production for Avatar can only fail so many times before it gets done right or is over because it doesn’t have support. Like Avatars learning from the successes and failures of past Avatars. I think the fact that this one is animated demonstraits the trail of learning these things.

Hope the movie won’t be an epic fail like M. Night’s “The Last Airbender”! If it’s animated, I’m all for it!

SOMETHING JUST OCCURRED TO ME: if this film does happen, I imagine the Track Team will compose the soundtrack, and since it’s a film, they will probably release the music! Wouldn’t that be brilliant? Then we would at least have an Avatar soundtrack, and if that sells well, it might encourage Nickelodeon to release a soundtrack for the series’.

it would be AMAZING if this came out…but unfortunately it would take forever to animate, like Disney-Pixar long. they take 3-5 per movie, although of course, all their movies are classics

3-5 years per movie? Maybe for Pixar, but I’m not sure that stands for hand drawn animated films. Japan’s Studio Ghibli make traditional animation and they only take about 1-2 years.

I wouldn’t like the idea of another avatar movie except If it was the same style as koora(tv series) now is, maybe 3d is cool but i wouldn’t mind If it wasn’t in 3d, just 2d will do fine… The most important thing is that it must be handdrawn. Not like the ATLA movie, because that was awfull.

I agree, it must be hand drawn. but I’m positive it will be, I don’t think Michael and Bryan would want it any other way. 3D gets on my nerves a bit these days. It can be good, really good, but just the fact that everybody is using it and sometimes it’s pathetic and NOT 3D AT ALL, it’s just there for the extra cash. I think it would be nice if it wasn’t in 3D for a change.

I’d have to disagree that it’d be better if it wasn’t also in 3D.

Reason being that it’s not compulsory to watch it in 3D. All movies that are in 3D are also in 2D, which the majority of people watch.
However, there are a few percentage of people who enjoy the 3D experience. This would mean more money earned, and possibly more future fans.

I don’t think it would make much difference to how much money is earned, since those people who enjoy 3D would see it in 2D if it wasn’t it 3D. But then again, they charge more money for 3D, so that means more profit. But it may be tougher to convert a hand drawn animation to 3D(and yes, they’ll have to convert it because it’d be pretty hard to draw 3D images).

I think that a 2hr movie covering the end of the life of Aang (including the highpoints of his time as avatar), then crossing into Korra’s early life would be a great movie. Then you get the fans of both series and answer some questions that I’m sure many would be interested in. There are so many ways to do a good film that my idea may not be the best buy bears thinking on.

Ok so Bryan and Mike compressed the usual 20 episode length of a season for LOK, and now Paramount is going to compress 12 episodes of LOK in a 1-3 hour movie probably. I seriously hope we get to see more bending action if they do make a movie. That’s what drives me to watch ATLA/TLOK :P

I’m sure it’s not going to be just a remake of book one, that would be pointless, Mike and Bryan won’t just compress and reanimate a story that already been told. It will not doubt be a new story.

Yes, but it would be pointless to make an ANIMATED film based on book one(ATLA or Korra). There was more reason to make The Last Airbender because that was live action and it was a completely different group of people making it, but like I said before, I don’t think any of the Avatar crew would like to go through the same story and reanimate everything.

I don’t think they’ll be making a film based on LOK. Perhaps it’d be a side story, a side plot, that they can explore and conclude in 2 hours. :)
