SDCC 2012 Korra Panel Information Summary
Airspeed Prime here just as I was last year to cover SDCC for the site, again I am not at SDCC, but hopefully I can manage to compile all the info that comes out of the panel so everyone can experience it.
All of this info is from fans who are at the convention including this sites own Donna, who is tweeting during the panel. Jenny SDCC on twitter/Tumblr is doing the same as well as Hypable who did a live blog and Matt Patches on Twitter. So major thanks to all the fans who are in at the panel and are doing their best to keep everyone not at SDCC informed.
NOTE/ This post will be updated many times as more info comes out!!!
- Just a funny thing I saw someone tweet, once the panel before this ended little to no people left the room and it is a huge panel room, Dedication from Korra Fans.
- Panel begins with a montage of Book 1, With great music from The Track Team which ends with tremendous applause.
- Further confirmation of Korra now being 52 episodes and 4 books (12,14,13,13 is the Book Breakdown)
- 4500 People in the full panel room, with 4000 missing out on a place in the panel.
- Mike and Bryan kind of “interviewing” the voice actors present (Seychelle Gabrielle, P.J.Byrne, David Faustino and Janet Varney) mainly about voicing their characters and their similarities to their characters. Seychelle says that both she and Asami overpack, , Janet loves playing an Avatar so different to Aang, David Loves playing a big hero character and P.J loves Bolin so much he would never change roles.
- They start a script read from Book 1, with Voice Director Andrea Romano reading out the parts of the script that tell the actors what is happening in the scene, P.J Byrne is hilarious.
- They are reading scenes from K104 “The Voice In The Night” and K105 “The Spirit Of Competition”
- They are now doing the scene from K108 when they prepare for their first city patrol as TEAM AVATAR and a scene from “Turning The Tides” and a scene from “Skeletons In The Closet”
- BOOK 2 IS NAMED “Spirits and will take place 6 months after the end Of Book 1
- They are showing artwork from Book 2, including snowy landscapes of the Southern Water Tribe during a festival, including a big hall made of Ice.
- They will travel into the SWT Tundra, with bright green sky.
- They will encounter a glowing iceberg similar to Aang’s from 101
- They will travel back to the Southern Air Temple in Book 2
- We will get spirit world action, Book 2 will explore the history of the Avatar (creation of the avatar) and The Spirit World. 2 special episodes devoted to this (I think)
- Asami will take over Future Industries and Bumi and Kya will be main characters
- Bumi wears Pink earmuffs
- The characters will all have updated winter looks for the Water Tribe
- We will meet Korra’s uncle Unarock (not sure if this is the correct spelling, just what someone posted) supposedly all of Korras family is BA, lol
- Kya is a bit of a bippy, has a special bond with Jinora.
- Bolin will wear a green parka
- Mako will have a coat
- We will see more of Korra’s parents, Tonraq and Senna, including flashbacks of Tonraq in his 20′s…..Shirtless, Unarok is his brother, who is posh, from the NWT. More on North Vs South issue. He has twins.
- They show a spirit who is spiny and evil looking.
- Pro Bending will return, they show an Animatic of The Fire Ferrets Vs The Lion Elephants.
- Korra is racing Jinora in Airball and uses the Avatar State to beat her which annoys Tenzin, animatic I think.
- Motorcycle chase with Mako and Korra chasing some robbers.Storyboards.
- Mako becomes a cop in Book 2 !!!
- The Fire Ferrets now consist of Bolin and 2 new teammates, which I assume makes Bolin the Captain. Playing with new players the team is losing.
- Korra is attacked by a spirit and pinned down and uses the Avatar state to free herself. Storyboards
- Bolin looking for his path in life.
- Tonraq’s brother mentioned above is more in touch with the spirits and helps Korra with the Avatar State he is the head of the NWT, Chief I assume
- Bolin is friends with a guy named Verick and they have a funny relationship, as Verick is a ladies man.
- They are recording the crowd in the panel for use in probending crowd scenes in Book 2
- And that appears to be the end of the panel
- For Book 2 Bryan is focusing more on design and more writers have come in to help Mike, so basically work is being done on 2,3 and 4 as we speak in some form or other.
- Kya is really into healing

I actually think it’s going to start out with them losing quite a few Pro-bending matches, then they grow as a team together, and become masters. Winning match after match towards the end

That’s interesting. Maybe the dawn of the second industrial age is setting a rift between the physical world and the spirit world. It’s like with Hei-Bai when his forest was burned down. The anti-bending sentiment we saw in Book One also supports that. Perhaps the spirits will resent the avatar for failing to preserve the bonds between the two universes. That would definitely be enough for four books, and it would be relevant to the times in which WE live.

There were many waterbenders in Tarrlok’s task force, and I assume they’re all cops. Perhaps the ones that can metalbend are part of Lin’s special team: the metalbending police force?
So there could be other cops as well, and also non-bending cops.

Judging by this, I think it’s fair to say that Book’s 3 and 4 won’t take nearly as long to come out as Book 2 did after Book 1.

Yeah, I initially thought it was because Korra needs to focus on her spiritual self, so she goes to visit the Southern Air Temple, the place where Aang grew up in.
There’s also the Air Temple Sanctuary there as well, a very spiritual place
About Team Avatar, I’m not sure they are that anymore.
Asami, Bolin, and Mako each seems to have gone on a different path. They may still be together though, who knows?

Well, they are going their seperate ways, but they can’t be too far apart. Mako and Korra just confessed their love for each other, so unless something drastic happened, those two are still together at least.
Also, I have a feeling they might be in the sounthern water tribe more than in republic city for book two. The reason is they completely updated their outfits to better suit a cold environment, so they will all probably spend most of their time there.

Yeah, I think there was a clip where Korra and Mako were on motorcycles and chasing bad guys, so they’ll still be in touch.
But the Team Avatar things as a whole, I don’t think the group will be as close-knit as the original Team Avatar.
It is announced that they will be in the Southern Water Tribe for half the time, and the other half they’ll be elsewhere, so there’ll definitely be less Republic City. They’ll be in places like the Northern Water Tribe, and the Air Temples
Tenzin’s outfit really has changed a lot. I think I kind of preferred his Book 1 look, but I’ll make my decision when Book 2 has aired and I can see it in animation.

This is awesome news and maybe we will see a new form of bending in this story arc. Asmai I get a feeling that she will honor her mother in the new role and we will find out more. Not surprising that Bolin is trying to find out who he is without his brother because he always had his brother to rely on so will see more of his story. Mako a cop also does not surpirse me he always seemed the type. Interested to see what happens to Lin and General Iroh in the time so much to cover.

52 episodes is great news! And I’m glad we will seeing new ground covered with Books 2 being called Spirits not Water again.
More writers involved! While it was a great experiment to see Bryke do all of Book 1, I think this show needs freshness for futrure seasons. Bryan’s strength is definately more in art direction and I think LoK needs it’s chance to find it’s equivalent of the Ehazes who wrote some of TLA’s best episodes.
I’m really looking forward to seeing Korra’s family and what it means when the Avatar is your kin. We never got to see Aang’s parents so this is another great way in which Korra is different than Aang.
The origin of the first Avatar? Can’t wait! And a possibly spirit oasis in the SWT, interesting.
Pilot Asami looks so cool!
Can’t wait to see Kya and Bumi, don’t know what a bippy is though. Is that Irish slang? Or was that a typo and you meant hippy?
Maybe I’m being dense, but I also am missing the joke when you said Korra’s family is BA. What does that stand for?
This is a lot of good info for now. The only additional news I want at this point would be when can se expect a DVD boxset and when might we start seeing other Korra merchandise.

I don’t know. Korra’s main antagonist are rather the evil spirits and maybe she’ll discover something about Unolok or her cousins will spill something. But I’m not sure if any of that Yakone Stuff is gonna extend into Book 2.

Did you see that animatic scene that showed a spirit going to the Southern Water Tribe and attacking Korra?
Korra had to go into the Avatar State to fend it off.

i found out on another fansite that, “asami said that she needs to talk to someone in the south pole that can help, korra isn’t there she is on air temple island, so asami is going to talk to someone else.. it isn’t someone random so it’s probably someone new.. korra’s uncle? idk…”
- so that means asami may be separated from the gaang.

From how the evil spirit thing looks, I’d say it was an ancient evil being before the avatar. Which at one point, created the avatar to “banish” the evil into the spirit world.

I was thinking… maybe it’s a way for the writers to explain why the physical world in ATLA and TLOK seems so sugarcoated — not because it’s a kid’s show, but because evil was literally stored away somewhere else.
Though that wouldn’t make a lot of sense with the universal message of Avatar.
Just a theory I thought of about forty seconds ago. Don’t mind me. Just brainstorming. We have a few months until Book Two after all.

Most exciting part about the panel for me is the creation of the Avatar. We’ve all seen various avatars, but we’ve never seen the ORIGINAL avatar. So awesome, I can’t wait to see how the first avatar was created. And which spirit(s) created him/her.

got just a question, this bumi is aangs son, i know he has 3, but i guess he named him “bumi” becuse of his old friend “bumi” in the last airbender, my question is, what happened with the original bumi?? i can barely remember the last airbender episodes, havent seen the seasons in a while. thanks!

So Book 2 is entitled “Spirits” well if you look at the previous books they are named after the 4 elements, some says that spirit is probably the forgotten 5th element but still its great. So their next opponents will have to be evil spirits, I don’t know how will the rest of Team Avatar deal will this, its like fighting through thin air. There is no doubt someone is controlling them. And of course they can’t go into the real world unless there is a portal that connects the real world to the spirit world.
Well they say it’ll be divided into 2 parts; the first part will be in Republic City, I’m thinking we’ll get to see Mako in a uniform being a cop, Asami will probably be in a desk working, we’ll get to see Bolin’s new teammates and hopefully we’ll get to see Skoochy.
As for part 2 well it’ll center on the water tribe that they are on a brink of a civil war between the Northern and Southern Water Tribe. Its strange that its almost like that of the US Civil War back in the 1860s. So being a member of the Water Tribe, Korra will probably be peacekeeper to both sides (but being born in the Southern Tribe will have some disadvantage but I heard that her uncle is the leader of the Northern Tribe so maybe he’ll be by her side).
When I saw Kya for the first time I say “whoa” she’s beautiful for a woman who is in her mid-50s I think. I’m hoping that she’s married, I mean if she is her teens to early 20s back then every guy in the water tribe (both northern and southern) would probably court her. I would be surprise if she is single, I would open my jaw wide, I mean is she in celibacy or something.
Anyway we’ll get to see more of Korra’s family and well she doesn’t have any siblings. This guy Verrik looks more like a nobleman to me. Korra’s cousins and at the same time Unolok’s children, the first time I look at them wow you don’t know who is who that the only way to know who is who is the eyes, the girl has some sort of purple eyeliner that is painted in the edge of her eye and the guy well he doesn’t of course.
I was bummed that they’ll release book 2 sometime next year, I was hoping that they’ll release it on fall this year but I’m hoping that this is worth the wait (hopefully nothing will happen on December 21, 2012 as may people say that its the end of the world).

oh come on, (in a nice way) every time they were together the tension in the room was screaming kiss kiss, each time i saw mako i screamed get out of the way and stop being such a tofu, looking all nice and kind but inside taste like beans. I don’t know the makoxkorra thing for me ruined( i guess diminish) the rhythem and timing of the story. If they had more episode but with only 12 adding the main conflict, the pro bending, and the romance, was just to fast pace.
but if you like it good for you. I been though highschool so this seem to unrealistic. And asami i feel so sad for you. You lost your home, father, bf and the only other girl you knew kissed your bf secretly… just glad you didn’t turn evil. I think she represent the goodness in everyone. No matter how bad things get, don’t use it as an excuse to do evil. One things the creators did right was made her a strong women. I just hope the fans aren’t copying mako way of doing things. Treat your gf with respect. And if you don’t like someone, tell them the truth before you go kiss a god/superbeing.

Actually addressing your point.
What exactly did Mako do wrong ? Have feelings for 2 different girls and handle the situation well in the end.
Asami handled the situation maturely and was not upset about it, I really don’t get why the fandom seem to think Mako did so much wrong. He apologised to her and she accepted it, he admitted that he still has feelings for Asami. How could he have better handled the situation, it would have been worse if he had kept down his feelings for Korra, Amon would not have been defeated.
Asami saw that him and Korra had a deeper connection than the herself and him.
Mako had feelings for 2 girls, and did not really know how to deal with it until he did in K111. Everyone makes mistakes, we all seem to let Zuko off the hook for his mistakes, yet really put down Mako.
IMO it is not a big deal, Makorra had plenty of set up and development, if it needs more there are still 40 more episodes to come for that and to possibly give Asami a love interest

i wil keep this short. Mako never apologized for cheating on asami. (yes kissing another girl while you have a gf, i consider is cheating) And when asami conforted him in the kitchen, all he did was blame bolin for snitching him out. He didn’t say sorry or anything. And that scene where they went thier separate way (everyone consider that a break up) all he said is
M ” asami, i sorry thing got so mess up between us, but whatever happen today i want you to know how much i care about you.” A “i care about you to.” then asami kiss him on the cheek.
I don’t consider that an apology… but whatever makes you happy.
And the whole korra saving mako because of love, it was okay but i just felt the writer kinda weaken amon so that she could do that. It like for the entire series amon was supper cool, evil and smart. (and i don’t like amon or his ideology) And the last 5 min he does weak stuff. Like waterbend in front of everyone yeah? weak But fine i won’t comment on makorra again.

Well, if saying sorry is no longer an apology….
At the end what defeated Amon, a bit of overconfidence, thinking that no one could break through bloodbending, thinking that Korra could never unlock her Airbending. He was completely taken by surprise when she was airbending.
Look how far underwater Noatak was when he started to water bend, it was either that or die.
This is just how I saw these scenes, I don’t think I am making up stuff to defend the show, but who knows.

No need to be passive aggressive, I am not trying to force you to like Makorra, just pointing out that he clearly apologises for how things went with their relationship in an extremely sincere way, even Asami realises this.
I just found it odd that you mentioned the exact scene and dismissed it by not considering it an apology. Sure if you feel more was needed, ok, but Asami did not ask for more and handled it maturely. That is enough of an apology for me, and I understand if it you needed more.

I heard news that it coming out in the summer of 2013, can anybody check on that? And bolin going to have a relationship? Yeah, mako i loved at the begining, but he just kept making me…(angry, Disillusioned,) I hope season 2 all will be well.
I don’t want them to defeat the evil spirits. I want the to defeat the evil spirit, and actually show some growth. Zuko for me was the best character in develoment and in actually maturity.
And bolin has to be given more scenes. He just so funny.
