Night Talks about The Religious and Cultural Aspects of the Movie (1:37)
Question From – Jack B.
Summary – M. Night Talks about some of the Religious, Spiritual, and Cultural aspects that are going to be present in the movie.

  • One reason M. Night connected so much with The Last Airbender is that the cultures represented were intertwined with his own.

My Response – I’m always interested to learn about other peoples cultures and beliefs. One of the reasons I loved The Last Airbender was that it’s message was one of having peace between cultures and ideas, accepting people for who they are.

Shyamalan discusses some unexpected challenges he faced making The Last Airbender (2:49)
Question From – Teddy B. of
Summary – In addition to fitting in the humor, another of Shyamalan’s challenges was to work with CGI, due to the time it took to see the finished product.

  • Night discusses unexpected obstacles and challenges that faced him.

My Response – When I first heard about Avatar The Last Airbender being made into a movie, much like M. Night Shyamalan I was worried that it was going to be way cheesy, fortunately looks like M. Night is doing is best to overcome all the obstacles facing him.

  • Characters like Katara and Aang were intentionally drawn to be a neutral or mixed race, I see them as American, M. Nights Kids see them as Indian.
  • The Earth Kingdom is going to be Asian, including Toph (another major main character)

My Response – The Earth Kingdom is the largest nation in the Avatar World, and they are Asian … Doesn’t sound racist to me. I think M. Night made his honest best decisions when making the casting calls.

  • Night is way excited about the Soundtrack for the movie.

  • Shyamalan made the comparison that Asian Influence is to Avatar The Last Airbender, What Medieval is to Lord of The Rings
  • A new language is being developed specifically for The Last Airbender (Heavily Influenced by Chinese Calligraphy)

My Response – I thought M. Nights analogy was great. Avatar The Last Airbender is heavily inspired by the fantastic Asian Culture, but it also mixes several other cultures together, making it it’s own unique blend of awesomeness.

I know he knows the material and all but I’m confused as to why he kept mispronouncing Aang’s name?

    Admin / Jordash Reply:

Yeah, i’m still trying to get complete confirmation on why that was happening: you can read more in a post by UGO here:

I’ll get more confirmation on everything soon.

    art Reply:

Yeah from that it’s looking like he changed the pronunciation of some of the names.

    em Reply:

    he’s not mispronouncing the names,
the names in the animated series were altered so that the child voice actors could pronounce them with ease, in the movie, the names will be truer to the original pronounciation.

I’m not doubting you, but i’m wondering where you heard that information “The names in the animated series were altered so that the child voice actors could pronounce them with ease”. I’ve never heard that before, where did you find that out?

    em Reply:

ok, ill admit, youtube probably isn’t the best source, but if you go to the last airbender update no. 22 (i think this one) it says in there, and it does sound reasonable, different accents (i.e. American, Australian) can cause names and words to sound very different to the original.

    Admin / Jordash Reply:

Yeah, that sounds like a good theory. I think the movie will have the Asian Pronuncations (or possibly Indian? not sure) while the cartoon has the American way of saying it. Which I suppose makes the movie unique in it’s own way. It’ll take some getting used to.

how is Aang a neutral character he’s an Air nomad i don’t see many americans that take on Buddhism in a temple on top of a mountain he’s master even looks asian too, and the whole Indian thing did anyone else notice that there was an actual indian character in the show REMEMBER the guy who was helping Aang control the avatar state.

the closest thing americans have to buddhism are hippies

    Axx Reply:

Well, you DO know that ANYONE can take on buddhism? It’s actually racist to say what you said. I’m sure you didn’t mean it though, but I must inform you that there ARE many Americans who take on Buddhism. Nonetheless, as you said you don’t see many Americans take on Buddhism, in response, I say that I don’t see many humans airbending, firebending, earthbending or waterbending either. But you know, it doesn’t really matter. All that matter’s is the movie may or may not do well. But we’ll certainly find out.

    lol, good response

Yeah, from the ugo interview the biggest thing I see in his film Firebenders will require an external source for their bending and only the most advanced Firebending masters will be able to generate fire.

OMG, just look at the picture of Zuko further up the page, HIS SCAR IS ON THE WRONG EYE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ok that was all i wanted to say this time, not relevant, but still…

    Admin / Jordash Reply:

Oh yeah, you’re right lol. That’s because I had to flip Zuko to fit with the theme, I didn’t even realize it moved the scar around. Maybe i’ll fix that in the next design.
