Next Avatar Comic Series revealed – North and South

Big Avatar Comics news. We now have some details about the Avatar comic coming after Smoke and Shadow. The next series will be called North and South and it will be released September 14th 2016 in comic stores and September 27th 2016 elsewhere.

Here is the cover for Part 1

Here is the description

When Aang leaves to aid Zuko with the Kemurikage, Katara and Sokka return to the Southern Water Tribe by themselves. Katara is shocked to find that her beloved village has become a bustling city, with none other than their father, Hakoda, in charge! A Northerner named Malina seems to be behind this change, pushing the North and South to be more unified…but what are her true goals?

Creative team will be the same as usual. Gene Yang writing and Team Gurihiru on art.

I don’t think it is a surprise to anyone that this series will be about the return to the Southern Water Tribe, but it is great to get confirmation at last. I love the cover, it feels like early ATLA, but also brand new at the same time, we are returning to the place where it all started after all.

It seems like we will be addressing how the SWT went from basically nothing to the much more built up city we see in Korra. We know Pakku brought some people from the Northern Tribe to help rebuild and we will now see what exactly has happened. The other key factor they could reference is in relation to The Rift, Katara’s old friends, Nutha and Niyok, who both left the SWT to find work. Something is clearly up between the two tribes.

This new character Malina seems very interesting, in part because that is the same name as Unalaq’s wife who we never actually met. The timeline means it cannot be the same person, but perhaps some relation could be at play here, after all in Korra Unalaq is the chief of both tribes and wants to unite them. The Unalaq link is probably a bit of a stretch, but this series is shaping up to be very interesting, it should at least explain in part how the Chief of the North is the chief of both tribes.

*refreshes the korra search query on that publishing site for next ten weeks straight*

But really, this is great news. Especially the quick turnaround, compared to last time.

I just wonder why all of a sudden this stuff is going up on that website, rather than an article at, say, CBR being the first we hear about it like in the past.

    Airspeed Prime Reply:

I would be shocked if the Korra comic was revealed in this way. I think that is absolutely being held for a big website/convention reveal.

I assume that with the upcoming Korra comics they are just not placing as much news importance on the expected next Avatar comic.

I love the new designs! Katara has her hair braided again and Aang looks like he has a cape which resembles Older Aang and Tenzin’s outfit in Korra!

  Smoke and Shadow Part Three

wait a minute is Kei Lo turning from respectful toward his girlfriend’s ex to a rival status now ?

    Airspeed Prime Reply:

Honestly that early review is so vague, it is difficult to take anything about part 3 out of it.

    Xiu Reply:

but it is interesting that the third part of Smoke and Shadow is so highly rated up to five stars while the first part of Smoke and Shadow had only four stars, together with the second part

    Airspeed Prime Reply:

I cannot really comment on this because I don’t know where you are getting these star ratings from.

Online Eccentric Librarian rated it for 5 stars

    Airspeed Prime Reply:

It is one review where the writer gives no real detail as to why they chose that score, vs Part 1 and 2 which have many more reviews all of which give some detail.

I am sure Part 3 will end up being the best of the series, but a sample size of 1 5 star review is not great. Not to mention Part 1 and 2 both also got 5 star reviews, just on average they work out to about 4.5.

i was on Online Eccentric Librarian and how come that Kei Lo and Zuko a love rivals since Mai explained that she is now with Kei Lo

    CC Reply:

as Kei Lo is featured in the third part it could be also described the same way as in second part, OEL just simply doesn’t want to reveal what will happen with Kei Lo because from what I can analyze in this short review that this so-called rivalry is linked to Mai realizing her feelings for Zuko

i have a question the non-spoilers for smoke and shadow part 3 will be in the middle of March ? because this early review from Online Eccentric Librarian made me really curious and that a lot of things have not been revealed yet, for example how Azula has changed or what happens to Zuko, Mai and Kei Lo

I am really surprised there is so much talk about that early review of Smoke and Shadow. For me there is nothing of substance to that review at all, beyond the multiple mentions of Azula clearly showing the obvious focus on her.

Of course this is me coming at it having a different style of reviewing where I prefer to be more detailed even in non-spoiler reviews. Reading that review has had zero impact on how I feel going into part 3, it changes nothing with the speculation. And that IMO makes it a poorly done advance review, that would be fine for a part 1, but it is very basic for a final part.

As I have said on the podcast and youtube, right now I do not have access to a review copy. I have contacted Dark Horse about it and I hope to get a review copy at some stage, but I have had trouble getting a response from their new PR person. So I may not have a non-spoiler review this time out.

    Seth Buchanan Reply:

Yeah, it’s 75% basic synopsis, 25% vague “yeah things are good in it like the words and the way those words combine to form sentences, and the images those words are attached to are also good”.

It’s barely even a review, but it seems to be cropping up everywhere. I guess this is just a popular book reviewer that some people in the fandom happened to follow?
