Yea Katara is no doubt the compassionate side of the series…a bit too bossy at times but thas ok because that’s who she is lol 🙂

    Nuriko Reply:

She is probably the most bossiest character yet the most passionate.

    Airspeed Prime Reply:

Yeah, Sokka and Toph say it well in The Runaway, So compassionate and caring but maybe a bit too bossy, she just does it because she cares.

You know, these articles are really good. All in all, I do like Katara, but the few times I was disappointed in her was when she challenged Pakku, it was the lack of respect towards an elder that bugged me. Sometimes, she was a bit too snippy with Sokka. But the two times I really got irritated with her is in “The Awakening” for the way she treated her father. When earlier in the series, she was overjoyed by the thought of seeing him. Plus, if Aang had that much time to grow hair, that’s and awful long time to hold a grudge.

The next was her attitude with Zuko. You’d think she would have shown a little more forgiveness when he and Sokka came back from the Boiling Rock. Just my opinions of course, but sometimes, she could be a bit high handed and spoiled.

    rocky Reply:

Yea I found it odd too that she had that much resentment torward her dad in “the awakening” while she couldn’t wait to see him in “bato of the water tribe”. I think that in “bato of the water tribe” she was just overwhelmed to see someone she knew from home that she didn’t even think about how her father just let her and sokka with gram gram. As far as “the awakening” I think the time elapse caused her to start holding a grudge against hakoda (her father) because they had spent a long enough time with him that she wasn’t as overwhelmed with excitement to finally see him again that she began thinking about why he left and how he just left them behind.

As far as her not forgiving zuko as quickly as everyone else was like zuko said to sokka “I think that she somehow put her anger at me for the loss of her mom”. Which caused the episode “the southern raiders” to happen so zuko could help katara find the man that killed her mother.

    Airspeed Prime Reply:

It was a bit odd, but if you put yourself in Katara’s position, he left her and Sokka basically in Charge of their whole tribe, she had no Father Figure during some of the most important years of her life, it shows how strong she is that she did not constantly mention her Father leaving.
She says they were “lost” without him, add to that losing her mother very early in her life and then her Father Leaving, I completely see where she was coming from. She just needed to hear that he did miss her alot and that it was his duty to leave and fight in the War.

I also get why she was so angry at Zuko and took the longest to forgive him, She was the first to trust him, she was willing to use the Spirit Oasis water to heal Zuko’s scar, what if she had and then Aang remained dead, to Katara that is basically what happened when He joined Azula. She says herself that he is who she sees when she thinks of the Fire Nation, the Face of the Fire Nation to her. She hates the Fire NAtion for taking her mother from her, so she has as Rocky says correctly put her anger for the loss of her mom all on Zuko. And consider that The death of her mother was the most character shaping events in her Life.

*Wow I wrote alot, I truly am obsessed,LOL*

    Tracy Reply:

Still, you’d think she would have calmed down about her dad over those several weeks Aang was out cold.

And I think we all are obsessed, after all we are analyzing these characters.

    Tracy Reply:

I just thought too, Katara would have forgiven Zuko when he helped Sokka get Hakoda out of prison, but then, if you haven’t guessed, I am really kind of biased. LOL.

    Julla Reply:

First, I want to thank Airspeed Prime for writing this wonderful piece. 🙂

When Katara was acting disrespectfully towards her dad, she was exhibiting the signs of someone dealing with abandonment issues. Yes, it seemed like she held a grudge for a long time and was (at first) looking forward to seeing her dad, but that’s how abandonment works. You don’t know you’re dealing with it, until you’re in that type of position. Unfortunately, her reaction to the situation was appropriate, taking into consideration what she was dealing with.

The way she dealt with Zuko was appropriate for someone who was dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The trauma she suffered from losing her mom + Zuko chasing team Avatar all across the globe= transference. She transferred the trauma and loss experienced from her mother’s murder to Zuko, which is why she was so angry with him and seemed to avoid him at times.

I hope that explanation was understandable. I didn’t want to type out a novel, lolol.

  13. LightningSpeed-Zuko Said: Comment by LightningSpeed-Zuko on December 5, 2010 at 7:26 pm | Permalink

Yea Katara and Sokka saw every fire nation person really as evil and held what the fire nation troops did accountable to them all..and thus this caused problems in getting along with Zuko later on..but after Zuko proved himself..and Aang helping them to see the big picture..they realized things are not always what they seem and that not everything is so black and white or simple.

Just noticed that in the “the dester” katara is wearing her mothers necklace when she doesn’t get it back until the next pisode “bato of the water tribe”. I know its not a big deal but its funny. I may be looking at it wrong but it doesn’t look like the necklace aang made for her in the “the fortune teller”.

    rocky Reply:

    Nevermind had a brain fart

    Tracy Reply:

The Deserters came AFTER Bato of the Water Tribe, so she got her necklace back by then.

She wore the flower Aang gave her in the last scene when they kiss. It is in her hair… how romantic!

Yea she got it back then. I wonder who she passed her necklace down to after Aang and her got married…hmm lol..cause I don’t know if they had a daughter..we know they had a son.

  16. LightningSpeed-Zuko Said: Comment by LightningSpeed-Zuko on December 6, 2010 at 4:32 pm | Permalink

@Tracy..Yea you are right…in the Boiling Rock, after Zuko helped them get their father out..she didn’t forgive him then..and I guess that alone just wasn’t enough at the time. Katara is often too emotional at times when she doesn’t need to be or when it’s not best for the group..but that is both a flaw and good attribute I guess. Just gotta balance that out in order for it to be a positive thing..and the others in the group do this well for her.

good post, but i’m really confused about ‘the cave of two lovers’ episode. I thought it was very unclear whether they kissed in this episode or not, but I choose to believe they didn’t, since when the see the glowing crystals Aang says ‘so, umm,’ like he is about to ask Katara if they should kiss. Also it never actually shows them kissing, only holding hands.

Also I loved the first paragraph of this post – all the mentioning of hope reminded me so much of the ember island play haha.

    Airspeed Prime Reply:

I think they did, because at the end or the episode Katara blushes when Aang looks at her, that is what to me says they kissed

Grrr, I don’t know. I don’t really like Katara.. She seems, too. . . Mary-Sueish. She bothers me with how she acts like she knows everything. And how she hurts Aang’s feelings. (Aang Fangirl.) She has her moments, but for the most part, she seems like a stereotypical Main female protagonist. But I do agree, Kataang is Epic. 😀

    Julla Reply:

Disclaimer: I’m not trying to get you to change your mind, I just want you to understand her better.

Katara is an unusual cartoon character bc after her mother is murdered, she becomes the mother of her family. And after her dad leaves to fight in the war, he leaves her and her brother in charge of the Southern Water Tribe. Normally cartoon characters don’t undergo such traumatic events.

Her personality dictates that she is an emotional person, yet when she suffers these massive traumas, instead of crying about it, she steps up to hold everyone else together.
After a while, being everyone else’s support becomes exhausting, which is why she has bouts of “emotional stupidity”. I hope that explained her well enough.

I can’t speak for everyone but I love kataang. It just feels better because it is more built up. Katara and aang’s relationship goes on through all three seasons, but katara and zuko’s good relationship only goes about half a season. After everything they went through good and bad they came together and their love shined through. I know that it probably the corniest thing I have ever said, but I believe it 100% kataang all the way.

    Julla Reply:

I personally do not care about the shipping wars, but Aang and Katara do make a lot of sense. Even though Aang began as a silly little boy found in an iceberg, he matured into a conscientious and responsible young man. And Katara began as a controlling and emotional girl and matured into a trusting and courageous young woman.

Aang- His beliefs and teachings from the monks combined with his maturity gives Aang emotional stability as well as an uncanny logistical flair.
Katara- Her huge heart and loyalty combined with her responsible nature and compassion makes her a force to reckoned with if you do/say anything negative to those who she loves.
    A well-balanced relationship
