[spoiler] whoo! Awesome episode. We got to see a great example of Earthbending and we got some funny moments between Toph and them.
I was shocked about Zhu Li though plenty of people thought she hasn’t really switched sides.
My favorite part was when Baatar Sr. called Toph “Mother” and she said never tocall her that!
But hey..! We know who Lin’s dad is! Yay! Finally! And its NOT Satoru, or whoever. Defiantly my favorite episode. I’ll probably have more to say later so I’ll be back!

Considering the conversation with President Raiko, the spirit-weapon really is a nuclear weapon allegory (or just weapons of mass destruction in general). If one has it the other responds by acquiring it as well, turning it into an arms-race that might just result in omnicide.

Favourite fight was Suyin against Kuvira, just look at that fast-paced choreography and resourcefulness :)

    Ah, that was great.
Interesting that the spirits told Korra she was basically doing just what Kuvira was doing in wanting the spirits to fight. Reminiscent of Sokka in the Library looking for ideas on how to beat the Fire Nation and how the owl spirit viewed that.
Kuvira tying Zhu Li in that town and intending to blow her up… wow. And Opal too! This might be the beginning of the end of her relationship with Bataar Jr. That has to be an eye opener. He said NO and Kuvira didnt care at all about his sister.
I thought the expression on Kuvira’s face was interesting in response to Toph’s comment of giving metal benders a BAD name.
And we saw Varrick steali g the spotlight and basically treating Asami as his lowly assistant. I wo der if Asami will finally gwt through to him about how he treats people.

And sorry… typing on phone is tough. Typos abound!

    @airspeed LOL..carrot guy :P

This was a great in-depth episode..lil bit of everything, the fast paced action, some drama, comedy, lil romance and some spirit travely-ness with Korra :D It did not surprise me much that Zhu Li really did not change sides..there were subtle clues to it..mainly her doing that 180 without any warning..sure Varrick annoyed her at times but she likes feeling that needed by him, I think.

This was purely an Earthbenders brawl episode and for you earthbender lovers, it was a treat :) Seeing the Toph family work together WITH Toph was really great..of course Toph being her cranky self..she rarely wants to get involved directly anymore..but was really interesting for her to announce who her children’s father was :o..we really did not get much into that backstory prior to this episode. I hope maybe they will have time to shed lil more light on it but I doubt it with all the other backstories and characters.

Yea it was another confirmation of Kuvira’s cruelty that she was going to punish Zhu Li after Zhu tried to sabotage the spirit machine by tying her into the abandoned town and just plain obliterating her :( But was some fine hero timing for Bolin and Opal to get there just in time ^_^ I think it was nice that Bataar Jr. wanted to stop the spirit weapon from firing once he saw that his sister was in the target town..may be a prelude to him seeing error of his ways and joinin in on the good fight. Now the spirit weapon itself is pretty epic..especially for their time period..reminds me of a battleship class gun :o..them things are pretty huge.

We did not get to see much of rest of the group..Tenzin, Mako, Asami and company lol..just a small scene with them to counter-plan what may be coming next.

Aang: ..Well what do you think we should do??
Zuko: …Think about our place in the universe?

@moonpeaches Yea that is a great parallel, regarding Korra seeking spirit help as sort of a weapon when Kuvira did that as well as harnessing spirit vines..and the Last Airbender episode of “The Library” where Sokka tried to get the all-wise spirit Owl to help them fight the Fire Nation and the spirit/s catching onto that and refusing to help. So next episode may be Korra figuring out a way to stop Kuvira and her spirit weapon without spirits help…or spirits stepping in of their own accord later.

    Some quick notes
-Great continuity between Korra and The Promise comic with the metalbending school reference
-Some nice Book 3 call backs to K305 and K306 in that Su and Toph had the same basic approach to handling the Lin reunion, the past is in the past and not addressing what happened straight away like Lin wants to.
-Kanto (sp) revealed as Lin’s father was an interesting reveal in that it was not a character we know. Still we don’t know Su’s father.
-Carrot Guy was actually of note for reasons beyond just my obsession. This is a spirit who has been shown on screen to be a friend of Wan’s yet doesn’t do anything to help the current Avatar it adds to what the comics and Beginnings have presented before, the spirits think themselves above everything in the human world. They are a part of republic city now, yet the second things get tough they flee to the spirit world to avoid dealing with anything. Yet they all try to act like it is the humans at fault, Korra proving them wrong is something I want to happen so badly. The idea that seems to be present is that humans are always capable of change and learning from mistakes, but because the spirits never change they never take a risk or make mistakes, I think now is the time for them to defend their home beside Korra and co.
-Excellent Earth/Metalbending action throughout this episode. Wei and Wing’s double cable combo to save their mother was great.
-I really enjoyed the resolution to the Lin and Toph conflict. It was simple, but effective, they just needed to talk about an issue that was not talked about for 20 years.
-Baatar Jr showing what we have been saying on the podcast for a while now, his key character arc is not that he is just as evil as Kuvira, he is with her not because he wants to hurt his family, but because he wants to prove to his family that he is capable of greatness. Get out of his father’s shadow. Him not wanting to hurt Opal was a big moment.
-The Zhu Li reveal was easy to see coming, but worked well as a way to give Bolin and additional way to prove himself to Opal.
-Kuvira planning to attack Republic City makes sense, we end where we started. Nice to finally know where the endgame is taking place.

Finally my question got answered!! Baatar Jr actually cares for his sister. But the fact that Kuvira got her hands on the weapon and that it does so much destructive damage leaves me worried for Republic City. The Fire Lord did say she would help with guarding the borders of Republic City, but if it is attacked in 2 weeks then I wonder if that will change her approach. In terms of the next episode, “Kuvira’s Gambit,” I kind of expect a huge turn of events to occur. Maybe she will attack Republic City in 1 week instead of two, or she will change her plans since she knows Zhu-Li is a traitor. On top of that, since she has the weapon, does she need Baatar Jr. around? Maybe she will get rid of him as an assistant, although I’m not too strong on that.

I hope Korra convinces the spirits to defend. Perhaps they don’t have to attack, but defending will definitely show the bond between the spirits and humans that has formed. And lol about the carrot guy. What I don’t want is Kuvira making more of those superweapons, and I don’t want this to become an arms race like in the Cold War. Flying mech suits though? Sounds really dope and I want to see them in action. I hope Asami gets credit for her work on it, since Varrick is hogging up so much of the spotlight.

The Earthbending brawl was pretty sweet. Even if your favorite element isn’t earthbending, you couldn’t help but enjoying the fight scenes (my element is fire btw). And when Su’s zoomed in fighting scene came in, it was really nice because of the intensity and quick pace of the fight. Then Mother Earth, aka Toph lol, came in and literally destroyed every mech and soldier attacking. I also love how Kuvira knew she couldn’t beat them by herself so she had to accept their retreat.

But I just got this thought while typing, what if Kuvira DOES get rid of Baatar Jr.? His loyalty did waver in that split second, and they didn’t get enough time to show her reaction. That leaves me with that thought. But anyways, I’m looking forward to the next episode and the review of this episode! It also makes me a bit sad that the series is coming to a final halt at last. :/

I was thinking about how the Earth Empire compares to the Fire Nation in threat to the world. If Kuvira took the super-weapon to Ba Sing Se, despite it being in her land, she could take out the wall in 30 seconds in what the Fire Nation couldn’t do in 500 days.

The Korra spirit stuff is pretty good. I do think the more fighting oriented spirits should stay in Republic City. I think it is unfair to accuse them of leaving when the human citizens are evacuating but I assume the United Forces and fighting oriented humans are going to stay.

The Zhi Li stuff is the most debated part of this well received episode. To me it wasn’t a problem because the show didn’t attempt to make it a secret.

Bataar jr was great seeing him concerned for Opal.

Nice to see it will end in Republic City but with two weeks Kuvira must have enough time to build a couple more weapons.

    @trojanpeople
The problem overall with the spirits is that they did not make that decision, to divide up and have some leave and some stay. I think the implication is “We are spirits and we do not involve ourselves in the trivial wars of humans” the spirit who speaks basically says as much minus the word trivial.
They want to live in the physical world, but seem to refuse to truly become a part of where they live. They seem unable to commit to anything, unable to attach themselves or really care for anything.

They actually have a decent comparison to Toph in this episode. She wants to not act on Kuvira and the spirit weapon, but in the end gets involved because of the people she cares for. While the spirits, you just don’t know what drives them at all, they say they don’t want to become weapons in a human war, so why don’t they fight for themselves and for the spirit vines that Kuvira is destroying. The spirit in this episode makes Korra out to be asking them to do something evil, which is a huge stretch.

Yea no doubt that the spirits are still in their detached perception of not wanting to be bound to wars of the physical. Will be interesting to see whether they stick to that or get pushed to action..whether by Korra, Kuvira & her army or a 3rd party.
