    Hello, cosmobender here with some great news!

    I have decided after much deliberation to create an avatar game! Even better is that you! The community will be the primary driving force behind this project!

    Everyone that is involved will be credited on their work.

    Basic info:
    Genre: turn based strategy/what if game
    Programming: Done all by myself
    Sound/art etc: I’m a terrible artist, anyone want to do avatar art? Pm for more info or reply to this post.

    Game Modes:
    Campaign: Choose to play as any of the 4 factions, Firenation, earth kingdom, north and south water tribes. This mode focuses entirely on the what-if scenarios that could have occurred. Events will occur throughout the playthrough, and depending on your nation, can effect you differently and can even change the story arc radically. Imagine an ATLA where Zuko is actually killed by the pirates!

    Freeform: No events, no starting units, and no avatar to be seen, this is a free for all scenario(This will most likely be the multiplayer)

    Scenario: Much like the campaign, but on a much smaller scale. This would allow you to play through pivotal battles in the Avatar universe. Play as General Iroh and take the outer wall of Bah Sing Se, or play as Admiral Zhao and conquer the north pole! (I might even consider making a special scenario for the start of the war! No promises though)

    Nation specs(Including strategy archtypes):
    Fire: Buffs to offensive strategies and naval invasions. Experiences an exponential boost in strength after “Sozin’s Comet” event is triggered. Becomes severely weakened by the “Solar Eclipse” event.(Expansionist archtype)

    Earth: Unparalleled defensive units. Gains an even larger bonus in fortifications. Severe penalties when attacking from water. Almost no navy to speak of.(Economic powerhouse archtype)

    Northern water tribe: lacks ability to field large armies, but are very good units. Gains a massive bonus when fighting on home ground. Gets a massive penalty from whenever the “Moon Perishes” event fires.(Survivalist archtype)

    Southern water tribe: Boasts superior naval units(small elite ships), has best amphibious assault units. Fairs poorly in conventional war. Suffers similar drawbacks to northern tribe.(Trickster archtype)

    Archtypes:
    Expansionist=Relies on aggressively attacking to obtain resources to continue it’s onward drive

    Economic Powerhouse=Focuses on Defenses to build up large resource stockpiles to field massive overwhelming armies

    Survivalist=Also focus on defense, but rely on small elite forces to stem the tides of battle away from their home.

    Trickster=Nearly completely focuses on diversion and attacking weakpoints on enemy divisions, moderately sized forces are used to prod enemy positions for weaknesses then punch a hole through it.

    Here’s the plan regarding things such as releases and betas

    Alpha version: VERY early release, will only be playtested by those directly involved (create art for the game, help with programming, being a mod, etc.)

    Beta: A closed beta will be available to anyone a member of the community, just be aware though that you will need to ask for access to the beta.

    Open Beta: Once I feel that the closed beta has allowed me to stabilize the game to an acceptable level, I will release an open beta available to all. This open beta will include a neat little bug reporting tool so that you can help me and your community with all those pesky bugs!

    Release: When the game is a polished sheen, the game will move to a released version. I will still be taking suggestions for features, but note that at this stage, I will be more concerned with fixing bugs than anything else.

    This sounds amazing, I love strategy type games and from the descriptions of the nations it sounds great.

    Will there be any Air Nomad involvement in the game at all ?

    I anyone were to make a strategy game, they should do it before the hundred years war during some other war (cause there was surly one before it) and involve all the nations.

    That being said, this sounds awesome! I love strategy games. in fact, those are the main ones i play :)

    This is something i’ll be watching as it goes.

    @airspeed That actually sounds like a good idea!

    I can find some way of fitting air nomads into the game (like an air remnants faction) I’m also going to be adding a scenarios mode, so perhaps I can make a scenario where the genocide of the Air nomads failed.

    @Bryman I like to see this game more as an Avatar what-if machine

    So far I haven’t really gotten any real work done on the game (Actually I’ve hit a road bump with the map)

    That being said, does anyone know where I would be able to get a map of the avatar world that doesn’t have annoying dots and labels all over it like google images so graciously gave me? It needs to be pretty big too though.

    Yeah, a random suggestion could be that a group of Airbenders sides with one particular nation for a battle. As a special unique unit, the SWT on paper looks the weakest nation so perhaps with Sokka and Katara’s connection with Aang it could be a kind of special ability for the SWT, they call in help from some Airbenders.
    Maybe just the concept of each nation having a special ability that builds up over time and can be activated.

    Fire Nation – The Drill, a special vehicle that can easily take down X number of walls/defences, cannot be destoryed while it is on the field. But only lasts for a while

    Earth Kingdom – Walls Of Ba Sing Se, going off them as being a defensive nation, empowers defence and walls to make them near impenetrable for a while.

    NWT – Hmm, Ocean Spirit temporarily appears as a powerful unit

    SWT – Air Bender thing mentioned above, or a Warrior Spirit buff type thing where attack and defence is increased.

    No idea if these fit in with how you plan the game to be, just spraying out some ideas, lol

    The Opening of episode 1 of Korra might give you a good look at the world map. Or even the opening of ATLA I think has it too.

    Try comparing this game to Hearts of Iron, also, I always saw the Southern Water tribe to be a more elite bunch of warriors (Their units are generally more powerful than other nations, but are more costly to produce)

    I can see about adding special “Airbender” units to the earth kindom’s roster considering that the two nations were close enough that anyone that fled the genocide would hide in the earth kingdom. One can only imagine how expensive these units would be.

    NWT-I like that idea! I can also set it up so that it only appears if the firenation does kill the moon spirit

    Earth-Considering that the whole entire outer area seems to be farmland, I’m going to make Ba Sing Se the most productive region in the game(Giving it a very high value for a resource hungry firenation)

    Sneak Peak

    I’ve gotten some basic mapping done as well as collecting artwork for the game itself. Some artists doing original work would be nice though.

    Also, I’d like to ask Admin to sticky/pin this thread since the community seems to have sufficient interest in this project.

    I will also be posting regular updates to what I’m doing for the game on my profile, add me as a friend or take a look at my status updates!

    Thank you everyone! Here’s a quick update for what’s happening right now for the game: Finished the region-mapping completely for the demo level, I’m now working on basic attack/defend mechanics until I get a more complex one in place(Basically a 50/50 right now)
