Free Comic Book Day 2014 will take place this Saturday, May 3rd 2014 and as I am sure everyone knows there will be an Avatar comic available for free. This post is to give anyone attending the event for the first time all the info they need to make sure they get a copy of the book.

  • When Does it Take place? – Saturday, May 3rd 2014 starting from whenever your local participating comic store opens
  • Participating Store, is the event not in every comic store? – No, only certain stores actually participate in the event, you can find where your local store is that is taking part on the official FCBD website, http://www.freecomicbookday.com/
  • Ok, I have a nearby store taking part, how early should I go? – From my experience and other stories I have heard, go as early as possible. Some stores will have lines before the store even opens and they don’t have a massive amount of each free comic (There are a lot of free books available on the day). Judge this by how busy your local store usually is.
  • Cool, so I arrive early and get into the store, what am I looking for with regards to the free Avatar Comic? – Avatar is the front cover for the Dark Horse free comic, so it should be easy to spot, but here is the cover for reference
    FCBD2014
  • Great, but what other free comics are available? – There are many titles available and from many different comic companies. Marvel will have 1, DC will have 1, IDW will have a Transformers/GI Joe crossover book, Spongebob, Hello Kitty and many more. Most stores will have a strict 1 copy of each book rule so as many people as possible get the books.
  • Will all comics be free in the store? – No, only the ones clearly marked as being free comic book day books.
  • What if my store is all out of the Avatar book when I arrive? – We will try to have scans of the comic up here on the site on Saturday, so everyone gets a chance to read the book. Some places will be selling extra copies online afterwards, but if you miss out on a hard copy it may be difficult to get a hold of one.
  • Will there be any special events going on for Free Comic Book Day other than the free comics? – It really depends on your store, some will have writers and artists there for signings and some will have competitions, it all depends on what your store decides to do.
  • Will there be a review of the book up on the site? – Yes, I will be doing a written review of the book on Saturday, this will be followed by a podcast review on Sunday (For Avatar Online Podcast Episode 90)
  • I am new to Avatar Comics, are there others available to buy? – It depends on what your store has in stock, but there are many Avatar/Korra books that your local comic store should have. The Lost Adventures, The Promise (Available in 3 parts or a complete hardback), The Search (Same options as The Promise) and The Rift Part 1, in addition to the art books for ATLA and Korra Book 1 Air.
  • I think I am all set for Free Comic Book Day, Thanks for this guide! – Your welcome!

There was not last year for Rebound, so I assume it will be the same this time round. That said Dark Horse have really pushed Avatar Books digitally, so they may put it up online. Not really sure, but either way scans will be up on the site at some point.

How can we find out special activities at our local stores? I don’t think mine has a website.

Do they have a twitter/facebook, if not try emailing them or even calling them.
Or just go in and ask.
