Hello Avatar Fans, Airspeed Prime here for the eleventh time to present to you a Community Opinion. I apologise for this taking so long, with Christmas, Korra leaks and The Promise everything just got in the way. I also apologise if  there is not as many opinions in this months post, with everything going on this was not the main priority, but enough of that. We are here for a topic and this one is a variation on a previous Community Opinion Topic.

So The topic for Community Opinion 11 is as suggested by community member Atry

Your Wacky/Funny Avatar Story Idea

To explain further, I asked people to make up a story or scene in the Avatar world with no regard to continuity or canon, one that would be crazy or funny or both. Crossovers with other universes were allowed once it was mainly Avatar focused. Only rules were to keep them suitable and clean.

So lets get into the Story ideas !!!

Airspeed Prime (Super-Moderator/Popular Post writer/Facebook Administrator)

So my idea for this story came from just a random idea I had always had after I had seen the end of the show for the first time, so it has been in my head for a while now.

The basic idea was that After 321, Hakoda and Chit Sang formed a crime fighting team like Private investigators.

With this topic I expanded on that idea making it over the top and mad.

So my story is their first case as a PI Duo. Hakoda is the older one so he knows all about the various types of criminals, but cannot be as physical as before because of his injury at the Invasion (It flared up again), that said there is still a lot of fight left in him. He is also the bad cop of this team. Chit Sang is the criminal who has renounced his ways after his meeting with Team Avatar, he is the physical side of this duo but lacks the brains of his partner Hakoda. Chit Sang always calls Hakoda “Chief” and is the Good cop, but they can easily switch roles.

Onto the story, it is their first case and none other than The Cabbage Merchant comes to their Headquarters in Omashu asking for their help. He is close to tears when he reveals what has happened. Despite all of the times his cabbages have been destroyed he could always grow more, until now, someone has destroyed his cabbage….patches and he wants JUSTICE. Hakoda and Chit Sang are right on the case and call in a specialist in these types of investigations, SLEUTH SOKKA, who has had experience with the Cabbage merchant.

Together the now three investigators find evidence including herbs and plants that lead them to The Herbalist, they do a good cop, bad cop routine on her and find out she has been keeping information from them. She is scared beyond belief as she reveals that Miyuki is behind the destruction of the cabbage patches. Sokka reveals that through his own investigations that Miyuki is actually behind nearly every crime ever to happen in the world for the past 5 years, it all clicks in place when he remembers what Aang told him from when he met the Herbalist, she had mentioned that Myuki was in trouble with the Fire Nation. So they head to the Fire Nation and enter find out that Miyuki has Fire Lord Zuko captured and is sitting on his throne. A massive fight ensues, Chit Sang is injured badly by Miyuki, but Sokka and Hakoda together manage to take down the Cat-Menace. The episode ends with Miyuki in Prison, she turns to face Ozai who is in the same cell, “You have done well, my Cat, everything is falling into place ” he says stroking Miyuki.

My idea would be for Zuko and Uncle Iroh to meet Chong and the Singing Nomads. Of course Iroh is having a blast. he even has a crown of flowers on his head while he drinks THEIR tea. He sings, he dances and has a wonderful time.

All the while, Zuko sits off to the side, scowling, mortified that his uncle is making a fool of himself. Absently, he grabs a cup of tea, the Nomad’s tea, when suddenly, he starts tapping his foot to the music. Soon, he’s dancing around and singing, acting as silly as he usually is serious, wearing his crown of flowers.

But the next morning, when he wakes up and Iroh starts to speak, Zuko interrupts by saying. “We will never speak of this again.”

Atry

Iroh and Azula feel that Avatar Aang and his friends worry too much. So to cheer them up they take cactus juice, energy-enhancing tea, Bumi’s happy medicine, dragon-blood, universe juice and mix it all together into a nice punch bowl for all of them.

Katara, Zuko, and Toph drinks it all (saving nothing to the others) and get so high they grow to the size of skyscrapers and gain power 100 times that of Aang. In their ecstasy they decide to test their power by trying to beat one another.

At first they bend all available elements of the planet in typical fashion, but as their excitement grow they begin to fight so much the whole world swirls up into a storm. Unsatisfied they fly into space and begin to storm up the universe.

Katara bends all the water of 2 galaxies and forms it into an ice comet the size of 20 galaxies.

Toph bends all the asteroids of 200 galaxies and form them into a fist the size of 2 000 galaxies.

Zuko bends all the suns of 20 000 galaxies and creates a supernova the size of 200 000 galaxies.

And then they do it 12 more times and start fighting viscously.

All while Katara, Toph and Zuko bend all the elements in the universe into a raging storm with Sokka tossing galaxies after them like boomerangs, Aang, Iroh, Azula and all other inhabitants of the world get trapped in the storm. Aang goes into the Avatar State enhanced by the storm into a God-like form. He shows himself before his friends and ask them to stop, drunk with power they refuse to listen.

So Aang harnesses all the energy of the multiverse into an Avatar state 2 000 000 times more powerful than the Big Bang. With it he implodes all the dimensions of existence, holds it for ten seconds. The he releases it into a force that can never be comprehended or even put in words. The end result is that everything goes back to normal, except that now Aang has gained all the knowledge in existence, allowing him to bring ultimate balance and peace to not just his own world. Everyone in the world from the youngest toddler to the oldest elder celebrates, in reward for bringing salvation Iroh and Azula are rewarded with their own personal space colonies. To that they say:

Iroh: We just wanted to cheer them up a bit, we even tasted it ourselves before we served it, what happened?

Azula: It might be because before we served them I got bored and slipped in some of your jasmine tea into the punch bowl while you looked away.

Iroh: *smirk* You sneaky girl.

Azula: You know I am

This reminds me of a forum topic we had a while back where we told a story where the next forum poster had to post a continuation of the story that the previous poster talked about (and a person couldn’t post twice in a row).

The story went something like this: Toph, Suki and Sokka are walking through the world looking for Sokkas space sword, when they chance upon Longshot and Smellerbee, Smellerbee says he knows the location of the sword but will only give it to someone who is the champion in an all out duel. Aang and Katara happen upon the duel and decide to join in. Katara wins and is shown Sokkas space sword but refuses to give it to Sokka until Sokka apologizes for making her wash all his clothes. Eventually through a series of events (including characters from every movie and book imaginable) Sokka is able to get back his space sword without apologizing.

After the battle between Aang and Ozai was over and things had settled down, Iroh went back to Ba Sing Sei to manage the Jasmine Dragon. But when he returned, he found that Foamy, who had moved from Kyoshi Island to Ba Sing Sei, had talent in the art of making tea. While Iroh was away, Foamy had taken over the Jasmine Dragon for his own tea-making purposes. Iroh was outraged, and demanded that Foamy give him back his shop. Foamy took a fighting stance, growling at Iroh. A fierce battle proceeded. After a what seemed like hours of fighting, it looked like Foamy had the upper hand. But, just when it seemed Iroh was doomed to lose, He spied a vase to his left. Grabbing the vase, he slipped it onto Foamy’s head, pushing it down just far enough for it to get stuck. Iroh was victorious. He walked triumphantly into The Jasmine Dragon, While Foamy stumbled around with the vase on his head.

Avatar Spirit

• Iroh and his relationship with Zuko will come up in future parts
• Zuko being related to Roku, mainly Roku finding this out will also come up in a future part
• We will see more of Suki, especially in Part 3
• What Ursa’s absence means is more important than What actually happened, from Mike and Bryan. This along with a recent interview Mike and Bryan had suggests that Ursa will not be resolved in The Promise, but it does also suggest that there is something else coming that we will find out about her in.
• Gene Yang really likes Sneers, he is trying to include him to get out more of his character
• Azula does make an appearance in these comics, he also confirmed that as we knew Azula is in an Asylum
• New Flying Bison and Lemurs as of now are not in the comics

Hello comic fans, this is Airspeed Prime here. As some of you may know if you read my review of The Lost Adventures, I am the site’s comic reviewer and I am here today to review Avatar The Last Airbender – The Promise Part 1 which is out today (January 25th) in comic stores (February 7th for book stores and sites like Amazon). I would have liked to put this review out early to help you guys make a decision on if you want to get the book or not, but unlike many comic sites and a few other Avatar sites out there we did not get a review copy from Dark Horse

Now to start off I think we first need to realise just how important this graphic novel series is for the Avatar universe and fandom. This book is going to continue on the ATLA story and bridge the original series and Korra, so it serves two purposes and are 2 great reasons alone to buy this book. It has been about 3 and half years at this stage since ATLA ended and we have had that time to think about what happens next as not everything was resolved, so with this series we are finally going to get some answers and see what the end of the War brings to the Avatar world. Now on to the fact that this is a comic and not animation, many fans when they first heard about this series wondered why it was not going to be episodes, I completely understand this, but we do know from The Lost Adventures that Avatar can work so well in comic form, many of those stories felt just like watching an episode and this book is even better.

So after my fairly lengthy intro I will get into my review which I will split into non spoiler and spoiler parts. I feel like there is not much I can say about the book if I do not mention any details.

My Review

Avatar The Last Airbender The Promise Part 1

So I will start with my non spoiler review. Basically my overall opinion on this book is that it is amazing, very well written and stunningly illustrated. What this book does so well is that it deals with exactly what you know still needs to be resolved at the end of ATLA, so if we remember how the show ended, Aang beat Ozai, Katara and Zuko beat Azula, OWL took back Ba Sing Se thus ending the war and bringing peace to the world. Yes right up until peace in the world, because the War is over yes, but can the other nations so quickly begin to trust the fire nation again, can the world even have peace after 100 years of war.

Page 1 of the book, glorious art and a fantastic reference to the show.

So there are problems still to be resolved, and this book is the perfect introduction back into the Avatar world 1 year on from the finale. We begin with Katara narrating (a great reference to ATLA) and we catch up to where the show ended and get more after that before we move on a year later. Part 1 is a lot of introduction, which may come across as a flaw, but it is not, the book is specifically called part 1 so obviously it will have the job of getting us back into things a year on. That said the story flows very well and has a nice pace; it is never bogged down in too much explanation and is never too fast paced. It has the feel of the Ba Sing Se story arc from the show and In my opinion just as interesting.

Here is a great reference, Sokka refers to Smellerbee as a "he" and is later corrected by Katara, referencing Iroh's confusion.

You can see throughout the book the quality of the writing and the amount of care an attention that went into making this book perfect, the references to the show are great and quite obscure at times and it is clear that Gene Yang knows how to write the characters and you can tell that Mike and Bryan were involved too. The writing is good, but the Art is even better, Team Gurihiru was an inspired choice to do the art for this series. Their style is easily recognisable as Avatar without it being a copy of the animation style, what makes their style so good here is that it is slightly more cartoon-ey than the show, which allows the expressions to be extremely clear and characterful which is crucial in a comic medium where you do not have animation to show it. The art is consistent with only a few panels looking slightly messy, but it is not really too noticeable.

The book is the same "digest" size as The Lost Adventures, obviously is is a shorter book being a graphic novel. The size does not lessen the art and makes the book cheaper.

So to finish off my non spoiler review, this book is a must buy for any Avatar fan regardless of how you feel about comics. It is worth the less than €10 you can get it for from Amazon, you get 80 glorious pages of Avatar art, the continuation of the show and another piece of Avatar merchandise! What is not to like? The story is set up very well in this part 1, my only negative is not really a fair complaint as it is dependent on what is in part 2. It is some of the stuff we do not see, no Iroh, no Azula, no Sukka (Sokka Suki relationship scenes), but as I said this stuff may be explored in the other 2 parts and is not a negative on what this book does cover. Part 2 cannot come soon enough for me, it is going to be difficult to wait until May 30^th for the next instalment.

WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD FOR PART 1

So now on to the spoiler section of my review (plus some thoughts)

Zuko is a big focus in this book, he is the new Fire Lord with major issues to handle.

I think the first big thing to talk about here is the big point of issue among fans when we saw half of the book in a preview. That being how Zuko is portrayed in this book, now personally I think the way he is here is perfect. I think many fans, mainly big Zuko fans make the mistake of thinking that Zuko is fully developed as a character at the end of the show and that he will never have to struggle or make a mistake again. This is not correct because of 2 reasons: The first one is that he does not know what is the fate of his mother, the second one being that he does not know how to run the fire nation fully yet. These are also two things that only Ozai knows, 2 things that still give Ozai something to hold over Zuko, 2 things Zuko needs to have resolved. So yes this book may be a bit hard for huge Zuko fans to read especially the final panels, but we do not know what Ozai wants nor do we know if Zuko will even do anything Ozai says. Also we know that Zuko and Aang together found United Republic, so he gets through this situation ok  :). Also Iroh is not present in this book, so Zuko does not have his mentor and true father figure to help him.

That leads nicely into why Zuko is struggling as Fire Lord. The reason is the main plot of these books, what to do regarding the Fire Nation colonies and the conflict this starts between himself and Aang mainly because Zuko is unsure if he, as Firelord, should side with his people or with his friend, The Avatar, both on opposite sides of the issue. King Kuei wants to put his “Harmony Restoration Movement” in to action where the Fire Nation people in the colonies are relocated back to the Fire Nation. Should they allow them to stay as they are and effectively allow the fire nation to keep that Earth Kingdom land (King Kuei mentions that his people think of the colonies as an “old scar” of the war) or return the colonials to the Fire Nation, uprooting innocent civilians. It is a lose lose situation for everyone, now clearly this is leading up to the fact that Yu Dao will be the origin of United Republic, Katara even sort of suggests that Idea of a 4 nations nation and is definitely being set up as being the neutral in this issue as she notices and is intrigued by the people of Yu Dao being two nations together. Back to the struggle, Zuko is at first sided with Aang completely as he says in his speech in the finale, but after an altercation with the mayor of Yu Dao he changes his mind. Throughout his arc in this story we get insights into what he is thinking and the stress he is under, assassination attempts on his life (one by Kori, the mayor of Yu Dao’s daughter), big decisions, not wanting to become like his father. Aang also has some nice moments in relation to this issue, he has to help the world heal after a 100 year war and has it set in his mind what Roku said to Sozin that the four nations must remain 4. The problem with this is that it is not that simple any more, the colonies are well established now, in these colonies the nations are mixing and as seen here marrying and having kids. I think what will make Aang realise that his way of thinking is not correct is his relationship with Katara, they are both from Different nations and his own view is effectively against his own relationship, not to mention Sokka and Suki too.

Aang asks Roku for advice about "The Promise" he made to Zuko

This leads into my next point. The Promise, the name of the series, what does it refer to? As I said above, Zuko does not want to become like Ozai, so he asks Aang to promise to end him if he ever does as he does not fully trust himself to make the right decision. Zuko makes one of the most mature and clear decisions of his life here, he does not want to do another 220. Aang agrees. So with Zuko under so much stress and making bad decisions, we see where The Promise comes into play. It is not the complete focus in part 1, but is clearly set up for something big later, possibly involving what Ozai’s motives are and what he will want from Zuko in exchange for advice.

KATAANG is present in this book, they are now in a relationship and are clearly in love.

The final thing I want to discuss is Aang and Katara’s relationship in this book. It is a year on from that Kiss and the two are full on Boyfriend and Girlfriend, they are truly in love and what is great is that they are purposefully portrayed as overly romantic towards each other which is nicely lampshaded in the book by Sokka constantly being grossed out by them. They call each other “Sweetie” a lot, I admit it is used too much, but I think it is on purpose to give Sokka “oogies” ammunition. I love the way they were not portrayed in here as having constant arguments, they started out as friends and have the communication down already, they have an overly sweet relationship, but not every ship needs to be dark and full of arguments. This is a nice change. Now I think what is being set up is that Katara and Aang will have an argument and question their relationship, Sokka will realise then that they are better together and get over his “oogies” to help them get back together.

Toph as usual being EPIC without even trying.

So in summary, get this book. It is not expensive, it is 100% canon and you will be missing out if you don’t get it. I know many Avatar fans are not comic fans, but what better time to start than with an Avatar comic and excellent quality Avatar comic. An amazing opening and intro into this series’ story, if Part 2 and 3 can keep up this quality then this is shaping up to be an unmissable series.

The Cover for Part 2, out May 30th in Comic stores and June 12th in book stores. I cannot wait.

One final thing. As many of you know Amazon leaked half of this book in their preview, it pretty much showed off the entire story and it either put people off the story or made them like it more. I can assure you that the 40 pages not in this preview adds so much context into what happens at various parts in the book.

I think I should have been a guidance counselor. I don’t know anything about being a counselor, but in my mind I act exactly like one. I make lists for everything I do. It is probably a little excessive. I make a list about what type of meat to buy: turkey or beef. I make pro and con lists about everything. I guess maybe I should have been a risk analyst. At least, I think that is what it was called. Whatever Ben Stiller was in “Along Came Polly”, his occupation would be perfect for me. Last night, I was comparing different bed sheet options and tonight I will compare Wildblue. I feel like every day I have to compare something new. It is almost become a hobby. I am sure it is a very twisted and strange hobby to most, but I enjoy it. I have always enjoyed things that keep my brain moving and this does. My father always taught me to exercise my brain because the mind is a terrible thing to lose. While it is a famous saying, there is a lot of truth in it.

JK Simmons talks a little bit about his upcoming role as Tenzin in Avatar The Legend of Korra

ComicBookMovie.com just had a chance to ask J.K. Simmons a little bit about his upcoming role as Tenzin in Avatar The Legend of Korra. As you probably know, Tenzin is the direct descendent of Aang and will play a major role in the series, being Korra’s Airbending teacher. We also know he will likely be narrating the opening sequences of Korra.

Fans know that in the upcoming Avatar: The Legend of Korra your character, Tenzin, is the son of Aang and Korra’s Airbending instructor; what else can you tell us about him?

Simmons – Not unlike the actor who provides his voice, he’s bald. And very virile. And wise. And attractive…

Does the fact that Tenzin’s father was the Avatar before Korra cause any strain between them when they first meet?

Simmons – That’s one of many things that contributes to difficulty in their relationship.

How did you get involved in the new Avatar series?

Simmons – The old fashioned way. As I recall, (which I often do incorrectly) I auditioned for this one.

If you could bend any element which would you want and why?

Simmons – Air. That way you can basically fly, which is my favorite G-rated fantasy.

I think it’s interesting how JK Simmons auditioned for Korra, maybe that means he was a previous ATLA fan , very likely.

JK Simmons, most well known for his role as J James Jameson from Spiderman. Looks like he'll be bringing some humor to Tenzin, can't wait to see how it turns out. He also auditioned for Korra, do we have an ATLA fan?

In the actual Korra part of the clip, we get to see some cool new shots including Equalists, Republic City and some shots that are in fact animatics (Animated storyboards). Last but not least what we assume may be the voice of the series villain Amon, the Equalist leader.

Probably the most important thing from this video is that Nick have finally shown of the show on their channel, meaning that Korra is ever closer to it’s release. No longer does just the online fandom know about it, but anyone who watches Nick.

It appears that this “commercial” is not actually a commercial at all. No one has actually seen it on TV, also from the leaker that leaked the Korra clips it appears that this is actually a brand advertising video never meant to be seen on tv or online.
So basically it means that this video was also leaked, that said it is still nearly confirmation that the shows name is Avatar The Legend Of Korra. We had it confirmed from other sources that Korra is going to definitely air in 2012.

It once again puts us in a situation again where we are completely reliant on leaks with Nick seemingly unwilling to talk about the show. Hopefully we will have more official news soon.

First off the release of The Promise Part 1 is just 16 days away, but I know many Avatar fans are not used to how comic release dates work and may be disappointed come January 25th. So hopefully this will explain everything you need to know to get your copy as soon as possible.

The book has a separate release date for Comic stores and one for Book stores

The Comic store and website date is January 25th while the book store and sites like Amazon’s release date is February 7th

I know many people preordered the book from Amazon so this is important information. If you want to get the book day 1 you will need to go to your local comic book store, and to help those new to comics here are some links to help you locate your nearest comic shop

I personally find this fascinating, King Kuei it seems will move into a main role here, and the Toph and Sokka bit sounds amazing.

So we have a lot to look forward to in the coming months, Part 1 is out in just 16 days and Part 2 in comic stores on May 30th and in book stores on June 12th. Also keep an eye out for my Review of The Promise Part 1 as soon as I can get my hands on the book.
