Thanks! C: (I’d been curious about that for awhile, and wanted to make sure I got the question in before you go to the end of this rewatch series, since I’m not sure what your plan on Avatar commentary is going to be after this.)
I know a lot of people aren’t really too into fanfiction—to be honest, even for people who enjoy it like I do, it can be really hard to get into, I think because initially you’re always going to be hyper-sensitive to even the slightest style differences or out-of-characterness compared to the original show, to say nothing of those which almost seem to deliberately stray wildly from the source material. But, for some reason, it’s one of my favorite topics even just in a kind of theoretical discussion, and I’m always excited when I come across one that really catches my interest.
Anyway, probably my absolute favorite episode in all of Korra. I loved the role old Toph played in this season, and it was really interesting to see the dynamics of Toph’s family as compared to Aang and Katara’s. I liked that it wasn’t all nice and happy (Toph’s insensitivity and stubbornness felt completely in character, I love that dual-sense of her portrayal in that she’s completely recognizable from who she was in ATLA, but her age also makes her different in a way that’s completely believable), but that there was a sense of resolution at the end, or at least peace, and getting to see that, beneath Toph’s gruff exterior, she really does care.
